Born around 1175 in Castile, Spain, from the illustrious Guzmán family, Dominic first served as a canon regular at Osma before founding the Dominican Order, which received papal approval in 1216. Alongside the Franciscans, the Order of Preachers became one of the most powerful religious orders of the medieval era, giving the Church great preachers and contemplatives and contributing immeasurably to maintaining the purity of the faith —
leading men to Christ through apostolic poverty and the preaching of God's Word. St. Dominic devoted much of his life to preaching against the Albigensian heresy, which demeaned Christ's humanity and the mysteries of His earthly life; moved by pity for the many who no longer knew Christ and His Church, Dominic set about winning them back to the faith.
It is within this battle for souls that St. Dominic's storied connection to the Rosary takes shape. Tradition holds that in 1208 the Blessed Virgin appeared to Dominic and gave him a spiritual "battering ram" revealing the form of the devotion and the layout of the holy mysteries of the life of Christ and Mary, which would repel heresy and draw believers into deeper piety.
Dominic not so much "invented" the Rosary as he preached its use to convert sinners and those who had strayed from the faith. From early in their history, Dominicans promoted the Rosary throughout Europe and later the missionary lands as a meditation on the principal mysteries of the faith; Pope St. Pius V (himself a Dominican) ultimately settled the form of the Rosary as the Church knows it today.
St. Dominic's patronage reflects his life of burning zeal for truth and his relentless pursuit of souls. He is the patron of astronomers, scientists, and those who are falsely accused.
According to a legend preserved in the Breviary, Dominic's mother dreamed before his birth of a little dog holding a burning torch — and when it was born, it set the world on fire; this dream foreshadowed how Dominic would inflame nations to Christian virtue through the brightness of his holy example and the fiery ardor of his preaching.
